Morning Sinus Headache?

The pressure and overall discomfort is not the way you want to start your day, but there are some simple remedies that you can try. First, let’s talk about some of the possible causes of your headache.

Allergies & Rhinitis

As comfortable as our beds are, they can also be hotspots for allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and even pollen. Heavy fragrances in laundry detergents can also cause an allergic reaction that can trigger sinus pain.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Otherwise referred to as OSA, Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when pressure causes your upper airway to close. This in turn causes your arteries to expand as they try to bring in more oxygen through blood flow, putting pressure on the skull. This type of headache usually subsides a few hours after waking up.

Bruxism

Teeth grinding, or bruxism is another cause of morning headaches. The tension that occurs when your jaw muscles tighten travels to other areas of the skull, including your sinuses.

Barometric Pressure

Changes in outside air pressure can often cause sinus pain due to pressure imbalances. The discomfort can usually be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, but for severe or ongoing headaches it’s best to see a doctor.

Treatments

Avoiding triggers is a good line of defense, but you should also take care of your sinuses by drinking enough water. Over-the-counter decongestants and antihistamines can help clear them out, and saline sprays can help when the air is a bit too dry.

Speaking of air, improving the quality of indoor air can help a lot! Keep surfaces clean and dusted, and make sure that you’re changing your air filters regularly. You might also want to invest in an air purifier for your bedroom.
